Can a Child Flourish Amid Serious Illness? A Stanford–ACREOL Conversation

In pediatric palliative care, suffering is rarely one-dimensional. It touches the child, the family, relationships, culture, and community.

During his visit to Rwanda, we welcomed Dr. Tyler Tate, Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University, pediatric palliative care physician and ethicist, for an exchange with our Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Christian Ntizimira.

The conversation explored:

👧🏽 Suffering and flourishing in children living with serious illness
👨‍👩‍👧 Children and families at the centre of pediatric palliative care
🌍 How culture, relationships, and context shape experiences of suffering
🔬 How research and evidence can inform clinical decisions and strengthen pediatric palliative care

At the heart of the conversation was one question: ⁉️How can we better understand a child's experience and use evidence to guide care that preserves dignity and supports families❓

In Memory of Regis “Bingo” Nsengiyumva: When Art Gave Palliative Care a Voice 🕊️

ACREOL Global joins Rwanda's artistic community in mourning the passing of Regis Igihozo Nsengiyumva, popularly known as Bingo Regis—actor, playwright, theatre director, visionary, and one of the pioneering artists who helped bring palliative care closer to communities through art.

Through our collaboration with the Rwanda Arts Initiative (RAI), Bingo was among the artists who helped explore a bold idea: using theatre, creativity, and Rwanda's own cultural language to democratize conversations around palliative care, death, dying, dignity, and humanity.

He understood that some of life's most difficult conversations cannot always begin in a hospital room. Sometimes, they begin on a stage, through a story, a character, a shared emotion, and an audience willing to listen.

His contribution helped build a bridge between art and healthcare, making palliative care more human, accessible, and rooted in the language and experiences of our communities.

We honour his vision, his creativity, and the path he helped pioneer.

The curtain may fall, but meaningful art continues to speak.

Rest in peace, Bingo Regis 🕊️.

Adopt vs. Adapt: Rethinking Palliative Care in Africa

Across Africa, culture, spirituality, family, and community influence how serious illness, suffering, and care are understood. This raises an important question: do we adopt existing palliative care models, or adapt them to the realities of the people we serve?

Our newly published paper, “Sociocultural Perspectives on Palliative Care Across East African Community Countries: A Narrative Review with Thematic Synthesis,” explores these realities across the region.

Featured in the Rwanda Public Health Bulletin (RPHB), Volume 7, Issue 2 (June 2026) by Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), the review brings four dimensions into focus:

🌍 Culture and community in shaping experiences of serious illness.
🙏 Spirituality and belief systems in care.
💬 Communication around illness, prognosis, and end of life.
💊 Access to pain relief and essential palliative care services.

Palliative care must make both clinical and cultural sense to the people it serves.

One Patient. One Journey. Why Should Cancer Care Be Fragmented?

Screening may detect cancer. Treatment may change its course. Palliative care addresses suffering and quality of life. But the person experiencing cancer lives one journey.

That perspective shaped a forward-looking conversation between our Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Christian Ntizimira, Dr. Gevorg Tamamyan, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of OncoDaily, and Lacy Hubbard, MBA, President and CEO of the Elekta Foundation, on the future of oncology care.

The conversation connected three areas that belong together:
🔬 Detect earlier: expanding prevention and screening so more people can access timely care.

🌍 Share knowledge further: connecting cancer professionals, evidence, experiences, and voices across borders.

❤️ Care throughout: integrating palliative care so physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs are addressed alongside clinical treatment.

For ACREOL Global, the exchange also brought an OncoDaily connection into the room. In 2025, Dr. Christian was named among OncoDaily's 100 Most Influential CEOs in Oncology, placing palliative care, dignity, and quality of life within a wider global cancer dialogue.

The future of cancer care is not one intervention. It is a continuum that sees the diagnosis, the person, and the family together.

10th International Advance Care Planning (ICP-i) Conference 2027

We extend our sincere congratulations and appreciation to the Hon. Minister of Health Sabin Nsanzimana, MD, PhD, for his support in making this possible and for helping advance Advance Care Planning as a meaningful reality in Rwanda.

This landmark gathering will bring together professionals, researchers, policymakers, patients, families, and advocates from across Africa and around the world to exchange knowledge, honour cultural perspectives, promote dignity in care, and strengthen health equity.

Why better palliative care matters in Rwanda's health system

Medicine has transformed lives by preventing disease, extending life and restoring health. Yet death remains an unavoidable part of life. A healthcare system should therefore be judged not only by the lives it saves, but also by how it cares for those it cannot cure.

The World Health Organization estimates that 56.8 million people need palliative care each year, but only about 14 per cent receive it. In Africa, access is even more limited, with fewer than five per cent of patients receiving the care they need despite the growing burden of cancer and other chronic illnesses.

These figures raise an important question: Why does palliative care matter?
